主讲人简介:廖智凌博士毕业于天津大学港口、海岸和近海工程专业,现在是英国赫瑞瓦特大学Lyell中心的副研究员。他的研究方向包括海岸水动力学、海洋波浪动力、近岸物质输移等。廖智凌博士关于低频波浪的研究已发表在Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Coastal Engineering,Journal of Geophysical Research: ocean和 Journal of Physical Oceanography等期刊上。

主讲内容介绍:Infragravity (IG) waves are ocean surface waves of low frequencies, typically between 0.004 and 0.04 Hz, that distinct from the wind waves or swells of frequencies between 0.04 and 1 Hz. IG wave plays an important role in many coastal processes, such as resonance in harbours, morphological evolution, and hydrodynamics in surf zones of beaches and on coral-reef flats. Under certain conditions, IG waves may account for 50% of the bottom shear stress and 41% of the runup. In this talk Dr. Zhiling Liao will provide an overview of the characteristics and modelling of IG waves in two coastal environments: beaches and coral-reef flats. He will discuss how our understanding of wave effects on ecosystems and the role of IG waves in hydrodynamics can inform us about the potential impacts of IG waves on coastal ecosystems. At the end of the talk, he will also present briefly the numerical modelling work of plastic transport in coastal area of Red River in north Vietnam dedicated to the NERC funded project ‘Sources, Sinks and Solutions for the Impact of Plastic on Coastal Communities in Viet Nam’.
